SGPIA Research Finds ‘Digital Divide’ in Google Street View of Environmental Issues, Slums

Google Street view is amazing. I once came across a quote from a podcast, “out of all the things we can look up on google street view, the first thing we look up is our home address.” I’m guilty of this. Gaps in information are pretty common. The wealthy usually always ignore the poor. There are many cancer valleys in the United States as well, like in Senator Richmond’s district in Louisiana. Did they collect the cartography of the missing areas; and chose not to publish it, or did they simply not collect the missing information. If the technology can, “display minute details of a range of environments”,  then why did they choose not to map the pollution and trash among the riverbank in Buenos Aires. Why doesn’t Google street view cover slum areas, and if they do cover slum areas, why do they cover the bare minimum. Not showing what is really going on results in erasure.

31 Maps Mocking National Stereotypes Around the World

I found Yanko’s map funny as I knew what nations and states where represented based from their stereotypes. The world according to Americans was funny and pretty accurate, but that’s according to American Media. I can only assume the other mappings are pretty accurate as well. Europe according to the U.S. is funny as the Godfather stood out to me in reference of Italian mafia. The fact that the whole island of DR an Haiti accredited to Wyclef was funny.

Reliance on google Maps Street View Could Create an Urban Digital Divide – Gregory Scruggs

Describing this attitude, Gutman cautioned, “What is not visible doesn’t exist, and if it doesn’t exist, we don’t have to take care of it.” This is the attitude of many. This is how many stones go unturned. Covert and passive attitudes can be a weak attribute at times for mankind. If the wealthy have the finances to do so, then why not extend the technology?
