Internet and why is it successful?

The internet is the most influential creation in this day in age because everything evolves from it. With the internet you are allowed to do many things as far as gaining knowledge, making money, connecting with old friends, building connections etc. The internet is very important but does have some flaws to it. The internet is not only positive but also a negative thing to contribute to our everyday lives. The internet is so successful because everyone uses it for many different reason whether it is good or bad.

Public Data and Internet

On the topic of making data more public is interesting because there seems to be a big opposition to having what seems as private considered data in public factors to become more public oriented. In the article, “Is Making Public Data “More Public” a Privacy Violation?” , there are numerous examples being given about the problem with making more data than it already is. A quote speaking about this is “ The current situation is bad for everyone: data trustees and data analysts have no clear guidelines in place, and users/consumers are in a position of constantly having to fight back against a loss of privacy. We need to figure out some ground rules to decide what uses of public data on the web are acceptable.”

The Internet works in many sufficient ways for people to use and take advantage of. There are both positives and negatives in which people could use the Internet to find and reconnect, gain knowledge, and other things while in the negative aspect there is cyberbullying the spread of fake information, and much more as well. It’s successful because almost everyone in the world uses the large data space to retain and discover information from any kind of use they specifically may need it for.

The success of the internet and how it works

The internet is made up of a series of networks which connects computer to computer that works with such things as data storage and servers. It also contains almost all the knowledge in the world; pretty tempting if you ask me. The internet, according to Christophe Bruno of Neural Magazine, was first intended to bring “a huge hope about sharing media, freedom of speech, breaking barriers between producer and consumer or between artist and audience”. This was until capitalism took the internet over and the web went from academia to a domain for total media control. Bruno describes this as the “Taylorisation of speech…in The Age of Access, where commodification of speech has appeared to daylight…the stake is to optimize this process of circulation of information, desire and advertising”. And through these methods is how you get reoccurring users. Furthermore, a reason the internet became and remains so successful is because of its’ users. Without us, it would be nothing.

How does the internet work? Why is it successful?

The internet is successful for many reasons, mainly for making the lives of many way easier than before. The internet provides its users with answers to many questions and hacks to help many people with anything they need. It’s one of the most used creations that we depend on daily as it vastly becoming a staple in our lives to the point where we can no longer avoid it. In the article, “Does the Internet Make You Smarter?” by Clay Shirky, he explains how we work with what we have to make it better. speaking about the Gutenberg press, Shirky mentions, “We built new norms around newly abundant and contemporary literature. Novels, newspapers, scientific journals, the separation of fiction and non-fiction, all of these innovations were created during the collapse of the scribal system” this is an example of how we have the ability to make things to make our lives easier. This is similar to the way our lives become easier thanks to the internet. Therefore, its purpose makes it very successful to many people all around the world.

How does the internet work? Why is it successful?

I think that the internet is incredibly interesting in that we often put so much trust into it. Whenever we look for a nice restaurant to eat in, we look online and we look at the stars that people give it. We do this because we don’t want to eat at a place that has roaches or rats, we want it to be safe. But in turn, we develop a dependence for it, the fact that the cell phone tells you where is safe and where isn’t can become a huge problem. In the article that talks about the most boring places on earth, it has a lot of potential for great mis use. For example, the article finds peoples ratings of certain places. Since this is the era where everyone has access to social media, a random mob can just absolutely tank the reviews of certain towns, restraints, etc. This could be devastating because some people don’t know what is going on. They simply see that the restaurant they used to go to has gone to absolute shit. So they don’t go anymore. To make it worse, these mobs can bombard the reviews with lies such as seeing rats/ roaches.

The internet was successful in that it opened a door to improving the lives of many many people. I honestly don’t know what I would do if I lost google maps!!! But it also opened the doors for mob reviewing and people using the internet to get what they want. It gives everyone so much power and there really isn’t a police for it. It is also successful in that the majority of our time on the internet is mostly positive. Whenever we want to watch youtube or check or email (which is really important) we can. It allows for instant messaging!!

Public vs Private Spaces

Smartphones and technology have revolutionized and improved our lives in many ways. Its improved our education and how quickly we can access information, it helps connect friends and families from all over the world, and has created thousands of jobs and opportunities for millions of people with online businesses like myself. But I think that smartphones and modern day technology and how we use it also has many negative affects on this society. Like Yudhijit Bhattacharjee mentioned in the article “Smart phones revolutionize our lives, but at what cost” I also agree that the way we use modern technology takes a big toll on our mental health. People dont know how to seperate whats real and whats fake, we have become so obsessed with posting our every single move and every single accomplishment that we think that, thats all we’re supposed to be doing when in reality life isnt as perfect as everyone tries to make it seem on social media. Everyone posts their accomplishments but nobody posts when they lose. It has become so crazy that in efforts to help people and the mental health problems that they have been experiencing due to social media, Instagram has decided to block certain accounts from being able to see how many “likes” people got, since many people obsess over the amount.

People post their current location, who their with, where they work, where they live, everything on social media. Its so easy to find someone just with their name or nickname these days. This is also extremely dangerous. Earlier in the year a famous NY rapper who went by the name of “Pop Smoke” went on Instagram and posted a package he had recieved in the mail from a luxory store, to show the world that he can afford it. What he didnt notice was that he accidentally posted his address along with the post. This was all it took for some robbers to find his house and try to rob him and eventually kill him. This never would have happened if he didnt want to show the world that he could afford a luxury item. And hes not the only one, hes just one example of this society obsession gone wrong.
